Medical Associates Adds New Doctor

BREVARD, N.C., Oct. 16, 2009Residents of Transylvania County now have more access to primary care with the addition of a new physician at Medical Associates of Transylvania Regional Hospital.

Transylvania Regional Hospital is pleased to welcome Morris Jenkins, M.D., as a physician at Medical Associates. Dr. Jenkins began seeing patients at the Brevard medical practice on Oct. 7.

“We are excited to have Dr. Jenkins join our growing healthcare system,” said Bob Bednarek, president and CEO of Transylvania Regional Hospital. “Our community has been telling us for some time that we need more access to primary care providers. With his friendly style and decades of experience seeing patients in a small community, Dr. Jenkins will serve patients well in Brevard and also help us meet this increased demand for primary care.”

Jenkins graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga., and completed his residency in family practice at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He earned his board certification in family practice in 1980 and then moved to northwest Georgia where he treated patients in a private medical practice for 28 years.

After retiring from his medical practice in Georgia in 2008, Jenkins spent seven months in New Zealand with his wife, Molly, working at a medical clinic. “It was a great experience,” Jenkins said. “I worked four days a week seeing patients at Moorhouse Medical Centre in Christchurch, and then we traveled around New Zealand on my days off.”

Morris and Molly already had their sights set on relocating to Western North Carolina before they even left for their adventure in New Zealand. The couple—married for 33 years—has owned a small cottage near Lake Toxaway for the past nine years. “We just love the mountains. The more we visited the area, the more we were drawn to it,” Jenkins said. “With both our children grown up and moved away, we decided that now was the time to make our move. We are both looking forward to being involved with this community.”

The couple will soon reside in Brevard about a half mile from the medical practice. They are already enjoying their next adventure. “I’ve practice medicine in a small town for decades,” Jenkins said. “I am very impressed with this community and the broad cross-section of people in Transylvania County. And my wife is very interested in the arts here.”

When not practicing medicine, Jenkins enjoys road cycling, hiking and playing the string bass.

Dr. Jenkins is currently accepting new patients. He will also be available to see patients with urgent needs at the Medical Associates practice that can’t get in to see their regular doctor. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 884-9030.
